    Automated Cell Viability Analysis

The Vi-CELL Cell Viability Analyzer provides an automatic and cost effective means to perform the trypan blue dye exclusion method. This data is essential to the decision making process for basic tissue culture cell passage and maintaining optimum culture conditions in bioreactors. Cell and tissue culture applications in life science research, including recombinant protein and biopharmaceutical production, require the accuracy, precision and automation available only in the Vi-CELL cell viability analyzer.

Determining cell concentration and viability accurately and precisely is a requirement in research and in the production of biopharmaceuticals. The Vi-CELL XR automates this process that eliminates variability inherent in manual sample preparation and counting.

The Vi-CELL allows users to load up to 10 samples at once for easy and automated cell counting.  The automated trypan blue staining procedure can be customized to ensure consistent and accurate cell counts for simple systems such as CHO cells and more complex samples such as yeast.  The robust design provides many years of duty, and can be operated by individuals with a wide variety of skill levels.  The high quality, pre-mixed reagents help eliminate variability.

The cell type function within the Vi-CELL Control Software enables users to optimize the unit for many different cell species, including CHO Cells, yeast cells, white blood cells, and a host of other common cells.  The cell type function takes into account cell clumping, cell circularity, cell brightness, cell diameter, and several other pertinent parameters.  This capability enables rapid, accurate, and reliable automated cell counting.  Further, the cell type function can be customized for unusual cell species that may be of interest in specific industrial or academic settings.  For more information on the cell type function, and how it can improve automated cell counts for CHO and other cell lines, please refer to the cell type tutorial presentation under the "Documentation" tab above.

The Vi-CELL automates the widely accepted trypan blue cell exclusion method. Historically, cell viability determinations were performed manually using a light microscope and hemacytometer. This technique has major shortcomings due to subjective determination of cell count, as well as manual, time consuming steps. In comparison to the manual technique, the Vi-CELL automatically performs the trypan blue with video imaging of the flow-through cell. Results are obtained in minutes.
